Why is birth photography so pricey?

A. Photographing a birth is like getting an inquiry from a bride saying that she wants you to come photograph her wedding, but isn’t going to set a date. She’ll just call you whenever. When you ask her how many hours of coverage she would like, she says she’s not sure, but probably around twenty-four, maybe only two. Then you ask her when she’d like for you to start coverage and she says she won't know, but probably around 2am. And also, that she doesn't want any use of flash.
So when you ask her if there will be wonderful, natural light she says that she’ll be getting married in a dark closet with no light whatsoever. She’s going to want the images right away to send out announcements. That would be a pricey wedding!!

However, my job does not start or end with the birth…

On call 2 weeks before birth
1+hours of prepping (emails, consults, etc)
2-10 hours shooting
3-10 minutes editing per picture (5-10 hours)
5+ hours of everything else (driving, posting, delivering)
= Average time of 20-30 hours per birth (not including on-call time)

We all know you can have Cousin Edna take your birth photos. However, wouldn't you want high quality, professional photos that you might even hang on the wall? In my opinion, birth, newborn and wedding photography should reflect in the amount you spent in every image!

Do you shoot destination weddings?

A. When do we leave!? Absolutely, I'll go wherever you go. Travel fees apply

A. I do not currently have a second shooter. I fly solo :)

A. I schedule each session at a specific time of day, according to your type of session. If time allows and there is enough lighting left (outdoor sessions), we can extend your session for an additional fee.

What kind of gear do you use?

A. I use the Canon 5D Mark IV, 50mm 1.4 lens and a 85mm 1.8 lens
